A state in northeastern India. It has an area of 22,400 km2 and a population of 1.77 million (1991). Its capital is Shillong. The three hill ranges of Garo, Khasi, and Jaintia, collectively known as the Shillong Plateau, are lined up from west to east at elevations of 1,300 to 1,800 meters, and the Shillong Plateau is a mountainous region almost entirely covered in forests. The Shillong Plateau was separated and isolated from the Deccan Plateau, and is based on the same Precambrian quartz and shale as the Deccan Plateau. It forms steep cliffs facing the Bengal Plain to the south, and the southwest monsoon in summer blows over it, bringing heavy rainfall. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
