An old town occupying the central part of the Shima Peninsula in Shima District, Mie Prefecture. The main settlement, Isobe, is located at the inner bay of Matoya Bay, and is served by the Kintetsu Shima Line. Oyster and seaweed farming, rice cultivation, and fruit cultivation are thriving here. It is included in Ise-Shima National Park, and is home to Izonomiya Shrine, a branch shrine of Ise Grand Shrine. In October 2004, it merged with Hamajima Town, Daio Town, Shima Town, and Ago Town in Shima District to form Shima City. Area: 78.19 km2 . Population: 9,485 (2003). 三重県志摩郡,志摩半島中部を占める旧町。的矢(まとや)湾の湾奥に主集落の磯部があり,近鉄志摩線が通じる。カキ・ノリ養殖,米作,果樹栽培が盛ん。伊勢志摩国立公園に含まれ,伊勢神宮別宮の伊雑宮(いぞうのみや)がある。2004年10月志摩郡浜島町,大王町,志摩町,阿児町と合併し,志摩市となる。78.19km2。9485人(2003)。
