An old town occupying the central part of the Shima Peninsula in Shima District, Mie Prefecture. The main settlement, Isobe, is located at the inner bay of Matoya Bay, and is served by the Kintetsu Shima Line. Oyster and seaweed farming, rice cultivation, and fruit cultivation are thriving here. It is included in Ise-Shima National Park, and is home to Izonomiya Shrine, a branch shrine of Ise Grand Shrine. In October 2004, it merged with Hamajima Town, Daio Town, Shima Town, and Ago Town in Shima District to form Shima City. Area: 78.19 km2 . Population: 9,485 (2003).
