He is known for his humorous and witty fantasy novels, including the autobiographical novel Peter Kindred (1919), The Bishop's Wife (28), Portrait of Jennie (40), Mr. Whittle and the Morning Star (47), and Sir Henry (55). He also wrote a collection of poems including Youth Grows Old (22), and plays such as Music at Evening (35).

[Died] August 8, 1958, New York American literary critic and theater critic. After graduating from Cornell University, he studied at the University of Bologna in Italy, and began his theater career around 1905. He also edited the literary magazine Smart Set with H. Mencken (1914-23), which published works by E. O'Neill and introduced new plays from overseas, including those by Pirandello, and had a major impact on the development of American theater. His books include The Critic and the Drama (22), Art of the Night (28), Encyclopaedia of the Theatre (40), and many others.
