A pass at the southern end of the Suzuka Mountains, on the border between Mie and Shiga prefectures. National Route 1 passes through a tunnel at the bottom of the pass. Since it was opened in 887 (Ninna 3) as the Asuha Road, which ran from Kyoto to Sakanoshita (Mie prefecture) via Tsuchiyama (Shiga prefecture), it has been a key transportation point heading to the eastern part of Japan, and known as a difficult place to pass after Hakone. During the Edo period, it flourished due to the construction of the Tokaido, and Sakanoshita had 300 inns. At the top of the old road, at an altitude of 378 meters, there is a wide saddle where night lights and remains of teahouses still remain. The national route opened at an altitude of 357 meters in 1923 (Taisho 12), and was widened in 1962 (Showa 37). In 1967, an accident occurred in which 13 cars caught fire inside the tunnel, and a bypass was opened in 1983 to ease traffic volume. National Route 1 over the Suzuka Pass is the shortest route between Nagoya and Kyoto, and has an average daily traffic volume of 8,436 cars (1983).
