A former town in Minamiamabe County, southeastern Oita Prefecture. Located in the middle reaches of the Banjo River, the area is mostly forest. Rice and wheat are grown in the lowlands along the river, and kabosu and shiitake mushrooms are also produced. Factories for medical equipment and refrigeration equipment are located here. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Saiki City along with the towns of Kamiura, Ume, Tsurumi, Kamoe, Honjo, Naokawa, and Yonemizu in Minamiamabe County. Area: 82.89 km2 .
