Scranton - Scranton (English spelling)

A city in the mountainous region of northeastern Pennsylvania, USA. Population 76,415 (2000). A commercial and industrial center, the city is particularly lively with a wide variety of industries, including heavy machinery, textiles and clothing, plastics, electronics, and furniture manufacturing. As a producer of high-quality anthracite coal, the city prospered as one of the leading coal towns in the United States from the 19th to the first half of the 20th century. The city also places emphasis on education and culture, with the University of Scranton (founded in 1888) at its heart. The surrounding area is rich in nature, including forests, lakes, and rivers, and there are many recreational and recreational spots, such as the Pocono Mountains Resort Area.

アメリカ合衆国、ペンシルベニア州北東部、山岳地帯の都市。人口7万6415（2000）。商工業の中心地で、とくに工業は、重機械、繊維・衣料、プラスチック、エレクトロニクス、家具製造など多種工業が立地し活気を呈する。良質の無煙炭の産地で、19～20世紀前半にかけ、合衆国有数の石炭の町として繁栄した。教育・文化面にも力を入れ、スクラントン大学（1888創立）がその中心をなす。周辺は森林、湖、川と自然が残され、ポコノ山地リゾートエリアなど行楽保養地も多い。
