A city in the mountainous region of northeastern Pennsylvania, USA. Population 76,415 (2000). A commercial and industrial center, the city is particularly lively with a wide variety of industries, including heavy machinery, textiles and clothing, plastics, electronics, and furniture manufacturing. As a producer of high-quality anthracite coal, the city prospered as one of the leading coal towns in the United States from the 19th to the first half of the 20th century. The city also places emphasis on education and culture, with the University of Scranton (founded in 1888) at its heart. The surrounding area is rich in nature, including forests, lakes, and rivers, and there are many recreational and recreational spots, such as the Pocono Mountains Resort Area.
