An annual plant of the Cannabaceae family. Native to Central Asia. It grows 1-3m tall in temperate regions and 6m tall in tropical regions. The stems are square and erect, with palmate compound leaves consisting of 3-9 leaflets. The flowers are dioecious and wind-pollinated in summer, with male flowers in racemes and female flowers in spikes on the veins near the ends of the branches. The seeds are about 3mm in size, slightly flattened, spherical, gray-brown to black, and hard. It is sown in spring and the stems harvested in summer. The stems are moistened with water to ferment, and then peeled to extract fiber. The fiber is used for textiles, mosquito nets, ropes, and fishing nets, and the peeled stems are called ogara, and are used to light welcoming and sending-off fires during Obon, and as chopsticks to be added to offerings. The seeds are used as a seasoning, and the oil is used for soap and paint. Drugs such as marijuana are also extracted from the inflorescences and leaves of the Indian thaim. Although it is often classified as part of the Moraceae family, it is classified as part of the Cannabaceae family because the stipules are not fused together and the seeds have endosperm, and is therefore distinguished from the Moraceae family. → Cannabis poisoning / Cannabis Control Act → Related topics Cannabis (hemp) | Hallucinogenic drugs | Plant fiber | Fiber crops | Narcotics Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
