Sacher (1917-1982) found a correlation by comparing the weight and lifespan of about 60 types of mammals. The larger the body, the smaller the body surface area compared to weight, so less heat is dissipated, less heat is generated by metabolism to maintain body temperature, and the number of breaths per unit time is reduced, resulting in less physical wastage.
