A type of two-wheeled vehicle. It can also be seen as a modified motorcycle. Motorcycles are ridden by straddling, making them difficult for women in skirts, men in suits, and the elderly to ride. That's why scooters have smaller wheels so that the rider can sit with their feet together and ride. There are also 80cc, 125cc, and 250cc engines, but the majority are 50cc or less, which is classified as a Class 1 motorized bicycle in Japan. Many have a V-belt type continuously variable automatic transmission and are easy to control. Due to their shape and performance, they are not suitable for long-distance driving, and are used mainly for short-distance commuting to work or school, shopping, etc. A driver's license is required. Their history is almost as old as that of motorcycles, and in 1921, models similar to those used today, such as the Neracar in the UK and the Megora in Germany, were produced. However, they only really took off after the Second World War, when economic exhaustion meant that people could no longer own cars, and the military industry, especially the aircraft industry, began producing them as they sought to transition to peacetime industries. The first scooter boom in Italy, the former West Germany, Japan and other countries subsided by the end of the 1950s as the automobile became more widespread, but a second boom began in the 1980s, mainly in Japan. This time, they are popular as a secondary means of transportation to passenger cars. As they are often used by women, they are also sometimes called soft bikes.
