A general of Imperial Russia. Also known as Stessel in Japan. During the Russo-Japanese War, he was surrounded by the Japanese army led by Nogi Maresuke during the capture of Port Arthur, and surrendered seven months later in January 1905. He signed the Agreement on the Surrender of the Korean War at Shuishiying. He was sentenced to death by a Russian military tribunal, but the sentence was later commuted.
