...Ulama therefore refers to scholars of religious sciences, and does not include scholars of so-called ancient sciences such as philosophy and mathematics. Jurists (faqih), hadith transmitters (muḥaddith), and Quran reciters (qurrā') are all members of the ulama. In real society, the ulama were indispensable to the lives of Muslims as scholars, teachers, judges (qadis), muftis, preachers, leaders of prayer (imams), qurras, and administrators of mosques.
