It was established in China and passed on to dynastic states such as Korea, Japan, and Vietnam, where it has been managed and passed down mainly under national systems. Chinese gagaku means “elegant music” and is opposed to vulgar music. It was established and developed based on Confucian ceremonial music, so in the narrow sense it means the music for the rites of the Tenchi sect, but in the broad sense it also includes music for state and court ceremonies and banquets.
