[Died] July 24, 1842, London British landscape painter. He mainly painted watercolors. He moved to London around 1798 and was active there. He came to know Joseph MW Turner and Thomas Girtin, and this led to a productive period of his career. The works he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1800 to 1806 have simple, geometrically sharp compositions and are considered to be the finest landscape paintings of the time. He returned to his hometown of Norwich for a time, and became a leader of the Norwich School. His main works include the watercolor Greta Bridge (c. 1805, British Museum) and a series of copperplate prints.

イギリスの風景画家。おもに水彩画を描いた。1798年頃からロンドンに出て活躍。ジョーゼフ・M.W.ターナーやトマス・ガーティンらを知って充実した制作期を迎えた。1800～06年ロイヤル・アカデミーに出品した作品は，簡潔で幾何学的な鋭い構成をもち，当時の最も優れた風景画とみなされている。一時故郷のノリッジに帰り，ノリッジ派の指導者となった。主要作品は水彩画『グレタ橋』（1805頃，大英博物館）および銅版画シリーズ。
