...This is the first example of Baroque decorative painting. The Carracci family's Academy produced Reni, Domenichino, Francesco Albani (1578-1666), Lanfranco, Guercino, and others, all of whom moved to Rome around 1600 and formed a large-style painting school (the Bolognese School) that combined the grandeur of Roman sculpture with the color and naturalism of the Venetian school. On the other hand, Caravaggio, a native of Lombardy who trained in Milan, also achieved great success in Rome around 1590 with religious paintings characterized by realism and a chiaroscuro style, and the influence of these two artists overwhelmed the late Mannerism of Zuccaro and others, marking a new era.
