Year of death: May 13, 1917
Year of birth: 1870 (Meiji 3)
Kabuki theater critic. Honna Taiichiro. Born in Okayama Prefecture. He moved to Tokyo at the age of 17 in 1886 (Meiji 19) and joined the Yubin Hochi Shimbun newspaper. He later moved to the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper and the Tokyo Mainichi Shimbun newspaper, where he was in charge of theater criticism. He gave brilliant performances in major plays such as "Terakoya" and "Kumagaya Jinya" at the performances of the Wakaba-kai, the predecessor of the literati theater. His performance reviews of Marumoto period pieces (katamono, gidayu kyogen), based on his stage experience, were unique and unmatched. His directing reviews, based on a view of Kabuki that harmonizes faithfulness to the original work with respect for formal beauty, are of great significance in the modernization of Kabuki theater criticism. His "Stage Observation Handbook" (reprinted in 1957) is a masterpiece that became a guidepost for subsequent Kabuki researchers. <References> Gondo Yoshikazu, "Modern Kabuki Theater Critics"
