Konya
A city in central Turkey, at an altitude of 1,025m. Also known as Konya. In Roman times it was called Iconium. It flourished as the capital of the Seljuk Dynasty of Rum in the 12th and 13th centuries. In the first half of the 13th century, the mystic Rumi emerged and founded the Mewlevi sect. Its mausoleum and monastery are widely known, and commemorative events are held every December. The city produces wheat, barley, cotton, Angora wool, tobacco, and saltpeter, and has carpet, leather, and textile industries. There are remains of a Seljuk fort and an old mosque. Population: 1,107,886 (2012).
