A long religious poem attributed to the 14th century English poet William Langland (1330?-1400?). Langland's biography is unknown, but from this work it is assumed that he was born in the Midwest, educated at a monastery in Malvern, and ordained in London. The work is an alliterative poem written in Middle English in the Midwest, and is a typical example of allegorical literature. There are three texts: Text A (c. 1362), Text B (c. 1377), and Text C (c. 1393). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
