A type of partial differential equation. The basic form of a hyperbolic equation is written as ∂ ² u /∂ t ² ＝ c ² ⊿ u …(1) (⊿＝∂ ² /∂ x ₁ ² ＋……＋∂ ² /∂ x _n ² ). Here, c is a positive constant. In physics, it is an equation that describes vibrations and waves, and the unknown function u = u ( t , x ) represents the displacement of the point x = ( x ₁ , …, x _n ) at time t . Usually, the problem is to find a solution to equation (1) that satisfies the initial condition. This is called an initial value problem for a hyperbolic partial differential equation.

偏微分方程式の一つ。双曲型方程式の基本的な形は，　∂²u/∂t²＝c²⊿u　　……(1)　　(⊿＝∂²/∂x₁²＋……＋∂²/∂x_n²)　と書かれる。ここでcは正の定数である。物理的には振動や波動を記述する方程式であって，未知関数u＝u(t,x)は点x＝(x₁，……，x_n)の時刻tにおける変位を表す。通常，方程式(1)の解で初期条件，を満たすものを求めることが問題になる。これを双曲型偏微分方程式の初期値問題という。
