Born: 1465/1470 in Guimarães
Died: c. 1536. Portuguese playwright and poet from Lisbon. He served as goldsmith to the court of King Manuel I and director of the Lisbon Mint. His literary career began in 1502 when he recited the Monólogo do Vaquero (Monologue of a Cowherd) to celebrate the birth of Queen Maria, and he wrote many plays and performed them at the court. His works are collected in the Collected Works of Gil Vicente (1562), edited by his son Luís, and contain sharp social satire and criticism of the church, as well as deep religious content and rich lyricism. His representative works include the morality play “Soul” (18), the “Ships” trilogy including “Ships from Hell” (17), the comedy “India” (09), “The Old Man in the Garden” (12), “Inês Pereira” (23) and “Judge of Beira” (25).

ポルトガルの劇作家，詩人。マヌエル1世の宮廷付き金銀細工師，リスボン造幣所長をつとめた。 1502年王妃マリアの出産を祝う『牛飼いの独白』 Monólogo do Vaquero朗読を機に文学活動を開始，多くの戯曲を書いて宮廷で上演した。作品は息子のルイースによって編集された『ジル・ビセンテ全作品集』 Copilaçam de todalas obras de Gil Vicente (1562) に集められているが，痛烈な社会風刺，教会批判を含むと同時に深い宗教性，豊かな抒情性をたたえている。代表作，道徳劇『霊魂』 Auto da Alma (18) ，『地獄の船』 Auto da Barca do Inferno (17) をはじめとする「船」3部作，笑劇『インド』 Auto da Índia (09) ，『菜園の老人』 Farsa do Velho da Horta (12) ，『イネース・ペレイラ』 Farsa de Inês Pereira (23) ，『ベイラの判官』 Farsa do Juiz da Beira (25) など。
