Shinyama Kofun

Japanese: 新山古墳 - しんやまこふん
Shinyama Kofun

It is a south-facing keyhole-shaped tomb in Otsuka, Koryo-cho, Kitakatsuragi-gun, Nara Prefecture. A row of cylindrical haniwa clay figurines and a ditch were found on the north side of the rear part, and the tomb has a total length of 126 meters, an east-west width of 67 meters on the rear part, and an estimated width of 66 meters on the front part. In 1885 (Meiji 18), a pit-type stone chamber was excavated in the rear part, and mirrors, swords, magatama (curved jewels), kudatama (tubular jewels), stone bracelets, arrowhead-shaped stone products, and belt fittings were excavated. The gilt bronze belt fittings are similar to those excavated from tombs of the Western Jin Dynasty in China. Among the 34 bronze mirrors buried with the deceased, three have straight-arc patterns. Seven cylindrical coffins were also discovered in the northern burial grounds of the Niiyama Tomb. It is one of the few early Kofun tombs in the Umami Kofun Group.
