Post town - shukubamachi

Japanese:
Post town - shukubamachi
〘noun〙 During the Edo period, commercial settlements developed around post stations that had existed since the Middle Ages along the Gokaido roads and byways. Their size varied depending on location and other conditions, with main inns with honjuku (main inns), small inns between post stations (ai no yado) and places for travelers to rest for a short time. Each developed first as a means of transport and then as a market. The general form is a long, narrow strip of town houses along the road. A typical example of a post town can be seen in the so-called "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido". They developed throughout the Edo period, but many of them fell into decline during the Meiji period due to the abolition of the alternate attendance system and the construction of railways. *Moriguchi-juku on the Tokaido - Moriguchi Station "Various subsidies for Moriguchi as a post town"
