Talc (English spelling)

Talc (English spelling)
Mg 3 Si 4 O 10 (OH) 2 . Monoclinic mineral. Hexagonal plate-like crystals. Usually occurs as platelets or fibrous aggregates. Perfectly cleaved {001}, the cleaved pieces are bendable and somewhat elastic. Hardness 1, specific gravity 2.7-2.8. The cleaved pieces are pearlescent and smooth to the touch. Pure white, usually pale green or green. A secondary mineral formed by alteration of magnesium silicate minerals (such as olivine), siliceous dolomite, and magnesite. Found in magnesium-bearing carbonate rocks and serpentine that have been regionally metamorphosed. In Japan, it mostly occurs as small lenses (1-several meters wide, 10-20 meters long) in serpentine. Good quality talc should have >60% silicon dioxide, >30% magnesium oxide, <2% calcium oxide, <1.5% aluminum oxide, and <0.5% ferric oxide. It is used in ceramic glazes, steatite porcelain, papermaking fillers, paint additives, abrasives, and pesticides. It is mined in Matsumae, Hokkaido, Saitama, Iwate, Ibaraki, Wakayama, Hyogo, and Okayama. During the Kofun period, it was widely used in various places for stone imitations such as mirrors, swords, and jewels for rituals. It was also used to carve Buddhist scriptures and for sutra tubes. It is also called talc.

Mg3Si4O10(OH)2 。
