Mount Senjogatake

It is the main peak in the northern part of the Southern Alps (Akaishi Mountains) on the border between Nagano and Yamanashi prefectures. It is 3,033 meters above sea level. Its ridges extend in all directions and stand out from the Ina Basin. The summit is made of chert and sandstone belonging to the Akaishi Formation. The summit is divided into three peaks, Ko-Senjo-ga-take, Senjo-ga-take, and Dai-Senjo-ga-take, and three cirques, Yabusawa, Senjo, and Ko-Senjo, which are glacial landforms, have been formed near the top of each peak. Senjo Hut is located on the moraine of Senjo Cirque. The cirque is said to be a treasure trove of alpine plants such as alpine snowdrop and thistle. With the opening of the Southern Alps Forest Road in 1980, it became possible to take a bus to Kitazawa Pass, and it takes about four hours to climb from the pass to the summit. From the summit you can enjoy a magnificent view of Mt. Nokogiri and Mt. Kaikoma to the north and the Southern Alps mountain range to the south.

長野、山梨の県境にある南アルプス（赤石山脈）北部の主峰。標高3033メートル。尾根を四方に延ばし、伊那(いな)盆地からは目だつ存在である。山頂付近は赤石層に属するチャートや砂岩からなる。山頂は小仙丈ヶ岳、仙丈ヶ岳、大仙丈ヶ岳の三つのピークに分かれ、それぞれの頂上近くに氷食地形である藪沢(やぶさわ)、仙丈、小仙丈の三つのカールが形成されている。仙丈カールの堆石(たいせき)（モレーン）上に仙丈小屋がある。カールを中心にタカネウスユキソウ、センジョウアザミなど高山植物の宝庫といわれている。1980年（昭和55）の南アルプス林道の開通で北沢峠までバスで行くことができ、峠から頂上まで約4時間で登山できる。山頂からは北方に鋸(のこぎり)岳や甲斐駒(かいこま)ヶ岳、南に南アルプスの連山など雄大な眺めが楽しめる。
