Takatsudo Gorge

Japanese: 高津戸峡谷 - たかつどきょうこく

A gorge formed at the mouth of the Watarase River where it meets the plains in eastern Gunma Prefecture. It is located in the southern part of Omama Town, Yamada County. It is also called Takatsudo Gorge or Takatsudo Valley. It is close to Omama Station on the Ashio Line. The 600m stretch from Takatsudo Bridge to Hanetaki Bridge upstream is particularly beautiful, and is also called the Yabakei of Kanto. There is a walking trail along the gorge, and along the way you will see scenic spots such as Byobuiwa, Isegafuchi, Hanetaki Falls, and Shishiiwa. The remains of medieval Takatsudo Castle are on Yogayama Mountain on the east bank, and Nagame Amusement Park is on the west bank. [Arisue Takeo]

群馬県東部，渡良瀬川が平野部に出る谷口につくった峡谷。山田郡大間々町南部にある。高津戸峡または高津戸渓谷ともいう。足尾線大間々駅から近い。高津戸橋から上流にあるはねたき橋まで約600mがとくに美しく，関東耶馬渓ともいわれる。峡谷沿いに遊歩道があり，途中に屛風岩，伊勢ヶ淵，はね滝，獅子岩などの景勝がある。東岸の要害山に中世の高津戸城跡があり，西岸にながめ遊園地がある。【有末武夫】
