A scholar of South Seas trade history in the early Meiji period. Born in Hirado, Matsuura County, Hizen Province (Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture). Graduated from the Classics Course (Chinese Texts Course) at the University of Tokyo. Commissioned by the Customs Bureau of the Ministry of Finance, he conducted research into historical materials on trade with Nanban in Hirado, leading to his choosing to research the history of diplomacy and trade from ancient times for his graduation thesis, and achieving pioneering results in this field. He was a man of great ambition, and travelled to Manila with the intention of spreading the idea of ​​colonising the South Seas and putting it into practice in the Philippines, but he died there. He was only 25 years old. 明治前期の南洋貿易史学者。肥前国松浦郡平戸(長崎県平戸市)に生まれる。東京大学古典講習科(漢書科)卒業。大蔵省関税局の委嘱により,平戸における南蛮貿易史料の調査に従った経験から,大学の卒業論文に古代からの外交・貿易史の研究を選んで,この分野の先駆的業績をあげた。雄図があり,南洋植民思想を普及し,フィリピンに実践しようと企図してマニラに渡航したが,客死した。わずかに25歳であった。漢詩をよくした。<著作>『大日本商業史』『平戸貿易志』<参考文献>江口礼四郎『菅沼貞風伝』,木村毅『南の真珠』
