A general term for the moss genus Sphagnum in the Sphagnum family. It is also called peat moss. There are about 300 species in the world, about 40 of which are in Japan, and they are particularly common in high mountains and high latitude regions. In particular, Sphagnum bogs form large colonies and occupy vast areas, accounting for more than 1% of the Earth's total surface area. The plant body is generally whitish-green and often reddish. The stem is upright, with several branches that grow in whorls at almost equal intervals, some of which droop and cover the surface of the stem, while the rest spread out horizontally. The leaves are scaly, lack a central vein, and consist of two types of cells: clear and green. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
