A term used in Japanese music. (1) A melodic form in Noh chants. A form in which the lower tone is drawn out and the end of the word is lowered to a riyo tone (the lowest tone in the chants scale). It emphasizes the sense of conclusion and is often used at the end of small sections such as "sashi." In the Kanze school, this is written as "sueru" in chants, but other schools often do not use this notation. (2) A melodic form in shamisen music. The tone is lowered midway through to emphasize the paragraph. It is often called "suete" or "sue." [Matsumoto Yo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
