Abbreviation for European Currency Unit. The calculation unit of the European Monetary System (EMS), which was established in 1979 in preparation for European monetary integration. It is used as the legal tender of the European Central Bank. It is a weighted average of the currencies of the 15 member states of the EU (European Union) and is mainly used for government bonds, corporate bonds, traveler's checks, etc. In 1995, the name of the currency unit was decided to be the "Euro". EU monetary integration began in 1999, but the plan was for each country's existing currency to be replaced by the "Euro" in July 2002.

European Currency Unitの略。ヨーロッパ通貨統合の準備として1979年に創設されたヨーロッパ通貨単位EMS（ヨーロッパ通貨制度）の計算単位。ヨーロッパ中央銀行の法定通貨として使用される。EU（ヨーロッパ連合）の15の加盟国の通貨を加重平均したもので主に国債，社債，旅行小切手等に使用された。1995年通貨単位の名称を〈ユーロ〉と決定。1999年からEU通貨統合が開始されたが，計画では2002年７月に各国の既存の通貨が〈ユーロ〉に入れ替わる。
