In the early Edo period, Yoshiyasu was a wealthy merchant and red seal ship trader in Hirano, Osaka. His name was Yoshiyasu, and he was also known as Hirano Magozaemon. Together with his father, Kanbei Toshikata, he was close to Tokugawa Ieyasu from an early stage, and after the Battle of Sekigahara, in 1601 (Keicho 6), he participated in the establishment of Fushimi Ginza by order of Ieyasu, and Kanbei served as its leader. In 1607, he succeeded his father, and was also appointed as the magistrate of Shiki and Kawachi counties in Kawachi Province (Osaka Prefecture) due to his achievements in the Siege of Osaka. He was well-liked by senior vassals of the shogunate, such as Doi Toshikatsu, Sakai Tadayo, and Honda Tadakatsu, as well as Konchiin Suden. From 1604 to 1609, they received red seal letters every year and sent merchant ships to Luzon to engage in trade. His descendant, Saemon Nagakata, succeeded his father and was also appointed magistrate of Kawachi and Shiki counties, and sent red seal ships to Tokyo (Tonkin) every year, thus enforcing national isolation. These red seal ships of the Sueyoshi family are called Sueyoshi ships, and three votive plaques depicting the Sueyoshi ships returning home from Tokyo in November 1632 (Kan'ei 9), 1633, and 1634 have been donated to Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto.
