They were British watercolorists, father and son. The father, Alexander Cozens (c. 1717-1786), is said to have been born in Russia, but was in England in 1742. After a brief stay in Italy, he returned to England in 1746 and established a family of watercolor landscape painters. He invented a technique called blot drawing, which made use of the accidental staining of color on paper, and became a pioneer of English Romantic landscape painting. イギリスの水彩画家父子。父アレクサンダーAlexander Cozens(1717ころ‐86)はロシア生れといわれるが,1742年にはイギリスにおり,一時イタリアに滞在した後,46年にイギリスに戻って水彩風景画家として一家をなした。紙上に偶然につくられる色の染みを利用した作画法(ブロット・ドローイングblot drawing)を創案し,イギリス・ロマン派風景画の先駆となった。息子ジョン・ロバートJohn Robert Cozens(1752‐99)はロンドン生れ。
