It once inhabited most of Africa, from the Balkans and Arabian Peninsulas to central India, but due to competition with humans, its range gradually narrowed, becoming extinct in Greece around 100 BC, disappearing from the Cape in Africa in 1858, Natal in 1865, Algeria in 1891, Morocco and Iraq around 1920, and Iran around 1930. Currently, only about 180 Indian lions, a subspecies of the Indian lion P. l . persica , live in the Gir Forest on the Katiawar Peninsula in northwest India.
