In Japan, it is an evergreen shrub of the Myrtaceae family that is cultivated mainly in pots as a flowering tree. There are about 30 species of the genus Leptospermum (English name south-sea myrtle) known from Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, and Malaysia, many of which bear beautiful flowers similar to plum blossoms. 花木として,日本ではもっぱら鉢物で栽培される常緑小低木のフトモモ科の花木。 ネズモドキ属Leptospermum(英名south‐sea myrtle)はオーストラリアを中心にタスマニア,ニュージーランドからマレーシア地域にかけて約30種が知られ,ウメに似た美しい花をつける種が多い。ほとんどの種は低木だが,高さ10mほどの高木になる種もある。花屋でギョリュウバイと名づけて売っているのは,レプトスペルマム・スコパリウムL.scoparium Forst.である。
