Gymnasium - Gymnasium

Japanese: ギュムナシウム - ぎゅむなしうむ
Gymnasium - Gymnasium

...Premodern schools, with the exception of universities, were often attached to other facilities (churches, monasteries, royal palaces, military barracks, etc.), and even when they were independent, they were often built by repurposing buildings for other purposes or borrowing their styles and techniques.
[Changes in Europe]
Among the ancient buildings used as schools were those called palaestra or gymnasium (both Latin names) in Greece and Rome. Both were originally sports facilities for wrestling training and other disciplines, with a colonnaded exercise area and surrounding baths, changing rooms, and lounges. It was customary for rhetoric and philosophy to be discussed in a corner of the colonnade or in the lounges during breaks in exercise, and they gradually took on a more school-like character.
