This village is located in the Kyushu mountains, upstream of the Kawabe River, a tributary of the Kuma River, in Kuma District, Kumamoto Prefecture. During the feudal era, it was ruled by a local lord, and as an isolated mountain village, the feudal system persisted. The sad song "Itsuki no Komoriuta" is said to have been born from a sense of resignation to the system of named sons and vassals. The village produces tea, chestnuts, and shiitake mushrooms, but the old slash-and-burn agriculture has disappeared. In recent years, the village has changed dramatically with the development of power generation, forestry, tourism, and roads. 252.92 km2 . 1,205 people (2010). → Related article Kawabegawa Dam | Kyushu Chuo Mountains Quasi-National Park Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
