… After the Battle of Badr in 624, Muhammad made the pilgrimage to Mecca an obligation for Muslims, but the Qur'an does not specify the method or ritual of the pilgrimage. His farewell pilgrimage in 632 set a precedent, and has been followed almost exactly to this day. Pilgrims arrive in Mecca by the 7th day of the month of Hajj, wearing two seamless white cloths called iḥrām and becoming purified as required by Islamic law. On that day, they circle the Ka'ba seven times (ṭawāf) and gallop seven times between Sa'fa and Mar'wa (sa'y).
