A general term (illustration) for wild rabbits belonging to the genus Sylvilagus , family Leporidae, order Lagomorpha, found in North and South America from Canada to Argentina. There are 12 species found mainly in North America, and the population is large, with 25 million of them hunted annually. The name comes from the conspicuous, cotton-white tuft of hair on the underside of the tail. The front legs are relatively short, and the body shape of a typical European rabbit is the same, but they do not usually make burrows except for nests for raising young, and instead sleep in designated areas such as bushes, like hares.
