A river in southwestern France. It is 336 km long. It originates in the central Pyrenees, flows north, then flows west in a large arc, and empties into the Bay of Biscay near Bayonne. It is navigable up to the middle part of the river. Tarbes, the capital of the Hautes-Pyrénées department, is located at the northern foot of the Pyrenees, and the hot springs of Bagnères-de-Bigorre, located further upstream, have been famous since ancient times. The Armagnac Hills, which form the watershed with the Garonne, are a major producer of brandy (Armagnac) along with Cognac. The area between the Oloron River (Gave d'Olonne), a tributary, is called the Béarn region, and is a region of hills deeply inscribed by the Pau River (Gave de Pau), the largest tributary of the Pau River.
