An industrial city in North Rhine-Westphalia, western Germany. It is located about 20 km east-southeast of Düsseldorf, overlooking the Upper River, a tributary of the Rhine. The surrounding area has produced iron and swords since the Middle Ages, and the city is known worldwide for its world-famous cutting tools (knives, razors, scissors, etc.), which are the core of the city's industrial production. The city also has industries in machinery, foundry, and electrical equipment. It was destroyed in World War II, but was rebuilt with wide streets and parks, and is surrounded by forests and farms. Population: 160,992 (2010).

ドイツ西部，ノルトラインウェストファーレン州の工業都市。ジュッセルドルフ東南東約 20km，ライン川支流ウッパー川にのぞむ。付近一帯では中世から鉄を産し，刀剣が生産されていたが，その伝統を生かし，現在でも刃物 (ナイフ，かみそり，鋏など) が市の工業生産の中心で，世界的に知られる。機械器具，鋳造，電気器具などの工業もある。第2次世界大戦で破壊されたが，広い通りと公園のある町として再建され，森と農場に囲まれる。人口 16万992（2010）。
