Ichiro Kiyose

Politician and lawyer. Born in Hyogo Prefecture. Graduated from the German Law Department of Kyoto Imperial University. After working as a lawyer, he became a member of the House of Representatives in 1920 (Taisho 9). He opposed the Peace Preservation Law, but later became a nationalist. He served as president of the Tokyo Bar Association, and during World War II served as general secretary of the Imperial Rule Assistance Association. After the war, he was banned from holding public office. He was deputy head of the Japanese defense team at the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, and was chief defense lawyer for Tojo Hideki. After his ban was lifted, he returned to politics. He served as Secretary-General of the Progressive Party, and was Minister of Education in the third Hatoyama Ichiro cabinet in 1955 (Showa 30). During deliberations on the new Security Treaty in 1960, he forced a vote as Speaker of the House of Representatives. He is an advisor to the Liberal Democratic Party. His books include "Secret Records of the Tokyo Trials."

政治家、弁護士。兵庫県生まれ。京都帝国大学独法科卒業。弁護士から1920年（大正9）衆議院議員となる。治安維持法に反対したが、のちに国家主義的となる。東京弁護士会会長を務め、第二次世界大戦中は大政翼賛会総務などを歴任。終戦後、公職追放。極東国際軍事裁判の日本人弁護団副団長で、東条英機(とうじょうひでき)の主任弁護人となる。追放解除後政界に復帰。改進党幹事長などを歴任し、1955年（昭和30）第三次鳩山一郎(はとやまいちろう)内閣文相。1960年の新安保条約の審議に際しては衆議院議長として強行採決を行う。自民党顧問。著書に『秘録・東京裁判』など。
