A Neoplatonic philosopher active in Alexandria from the end of the 5th century to the beginning of the 6th century. Dates of birth and death unknown. Known as the "son of Hermias" to distinguish him from Ammonius Saccus. A gifted man who studied under Proclus in Athens, he is said to have been the most capable man of his time in mathematics and natural science, but the only works he has left are his commentaries on Aristotle and Polyphyreus' logic. His students included three outstanding scholars: Philoponus, Simplicius, and Damascius. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
