Four Seasons Picture - Shikie

Japanese: 四季絵 - しきえ
Four Seasons Picture - Shikie
A painting that depicts human affairs and nature in the order of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. In the early and middle Heian period (late 9th century to 10th century), it became the main type of folding screen painting associated with waka poetry, and is sometimes used as a synonym for tsukinamie. The concept of four seasons painting remained the basis of Japanese painting for a long time after the Middle Ages, and the tradition of composing the picture in the order of the four seasons, such as the composition method of emakimono scrolls, ink-wash landscape scrolls, and landscape and flower and bird folding screen paintings, has been inherited until the early modern period.
