New Imperial Anthology of Waka Poetry

New Imperial Anthology of Waka Poetry

The ninth imperial anthology of waka poetry. 20 volumes. In June 1232 (Joei 1), Fujiwara Teika selected it by order of Emperor Gohorikawa. However, the process of its creation was complicated, and in October of the same year, the draft of the 20 volumes' table of contents and preface was submitted (formal submission). In June 1234 (Tenpuku 2), at the request of Emperor Gohorikawa, a clean copy of the draft of 1,498 poems was submitted (provisional submission), and in November after the Emperor's death, at the request of former regent Fujiwara Michiie, poems by poets related to the Jōkyū Rebellion, such as Emperor Gotoba, were deleted. In March 1235 (Bunreki 2), the selected version was delivered to Michiie (completed). The number of poems is 1,374. The collection is divided into three sections: Spring (upper and lower), Summer, Autumn (upper and lower), Winter, Celebrations, Journeys, Gods, Buddhism, Love 1-5, and Miscellaneous 1-5. The number of poems included in the collection is led by Fujiwara Ietaka with 43, followed by Fujiwara Yoshitsune with 36 and Fujiwara Shunzei with 35, with Teika's own poems limited to 15. It also includes poems by poets related to the Kamakura Shogunate, including 25 poems by Minamoto Sanetomo, and was nicknamed the "Uji River Collection" (a collection containing many poems by samurai). Compared to the seductive style of the Shin Kokinshu, the style is more simple and elegant, and in later generations it was praised as a collection based on fact.
