Year of death: 7/11/1280 (8/7/1280) Year of birth: Kennin 3 (1203) A nobleman and poet in the mid-Kamakura period. The third son of Yoshitsune. His mother was Fujiwara no Motofusa's daughter, Toshiko. He was Michiie's half-brother. In 1217, he was promoted to Junior Third Rank. After serving as a provisional Chunagon and Dainagon, he became the Minister of the Interior in 1237, but resigned from his position the following year. Like his father, he loved poetry, hosted poetry gatherings and poetry contests, and submitted 100 poems. He was a great poet, compiling his private anthology Unyo Wakashu and participating in the selection of the Zoku Kokinshu as one of the selectors. However, in his youth, he was not highly esteemed by Fujiwara no Teika, and after his death, he belonged to the anti-Mikoto faction that opposed Teika's son Tameie, and protected the leader of that faction, Fujiwara no Mitsutoshi. He was also involved with the retired Emperor Gotoba of Oki. 79 poems were collected in Zoku Gosenshu and subsequent volumes. He also excelled in Chinese poetry, and his works appear in the "Wakan Kensakushu." His career as a poet took an unusual trajectory for a poet from a powerful family. His own collection of poems was lost. (Kumiko Tabuchi) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc. About Asahi Japanese Historical Biography |
