A revolt by lower-class workers in Florence in 1378. The origin of the word ciompi is unclear, but it meant subordinate workers who worked in the preparatory processes of the wool industry (scouring, beating, carding, etc.). They were under the control of the wool guilds and had no organization or political rights. On July 20, when the defeat of the War against the Papacy (1375-78) was announced, they revolted, besieged the city hall, forced the representative of the city government to resign, and appointed Michele di Lando, who had been the middleman who organized the ciompi, as their representative. They then founded three guilds: the ciompi, the dyers, and the finishers. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
