Contrary to their names, the smaller Grand Terre is mostly low-lying, and Basse Terre is home to the Grande Soufrière (1,484 m), the highest volcano in the Lesser Antilles, and the department capital, Basse Terre. In addition to the main island, the department includes the surrounding islands of Marie-Galante, Les Saintes, La Desirade, and two further islands, Saint Barthélemy and Saint Martin (although Saint Martin is part of the Netherlands). …
