Piazza Armerina (English spelling)

Japanese: ピアッツァ・アルメリーナ(英語表記)Piazza Armerina
Piazza Armerina (English spelling)
A town in southern Italy, about 40 km north of Gela on the southern coast of Sicily, in a hilly area at an altitude of about 700 m. Population: about 22,000. The town was founded in the 11th century. It has a Baroque cathedral built in the early 17th century. The town is especially famous for a Roman villa on the outskirts. The villa, called Villa Romana di Casale, spreads out on the slopes of Monte Mangone with a complex architectural plan. In contrast to the orderly plan of Diocletian's Palace in Split (Yugoslavia), which dates from the same period, it is important as an architectural remains from the late Roman Empire, but the pavement mosaics covering about 3,500 m2 are even more important.
