Arikamedu (English spelling)

Japanese: アリカメドゥ（英語表記）Arikamedu

Located south of Pondicherry in the state of Tamil Nadu in southeastern India, this archaeological site dates back to the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD and shows traces of trade by the Roman Empire. The ruins were exposed on the banks of the Ariyankuppam River, which flows into the Bay of Bengal, and Roman artefacts were recovered. A simple excavation was carried out by a Frenchman in 1937 and 1941, but in 1945 Wheeler carried out a systematic investigation and achieved great results. Thirty-one pieces of Arezzo pottery (Terra Sigillata) that had come from mainland Rome, amphorae-shaped pottery for wine, and rouletted ware pottery with tumbled patterns were unearthed.

インド南東部タミル･ナードゥ州のポンディシェリー南郊の，ローマ帝国の交易の跡を示す前1世紀～後2世紀の遺跡。ベンガル湾に流入するアリヤーンクッパム河口の岸に遺構が露出し，ローマ製の遺物が採取され，1937,41年にはフランス人が簡単な発掘をしたが，45年にウィーラーが組織的に調査し，多大の成果を収めた。ローマ本土から到来したアレッツォArezzo土器(テラ･シギラタ)31片，ブドウ酒用のアンフォラ形土器，回転文土器rouletted wareが出土。
