Born: 1735. Kyiv Died April 4, 1822. Petersburg Russian painter. He studied under A. Antropov in Kiev from 1752, but was influenced by F. Rokotov's portraits. After becoming a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Petersburg in 1771, he gained fame for his portraits of aristocrats with a Rococo sensibility. He also excelled in portraits of female students, and many of his works are friendly and include psychological descriptions. His main work is "Miss Nelidova of the Smolny Academy."
