…In the second half of the 17th century, it was overrun by the French army during the War of the Palatinate Succession, but in 1816 it was annexed to Bavaria, and was the seat of the Rhineland-Palatinate government until 1945. The Romanesque cathedral (Speyerer Dom), dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. Stephen, is famous as one of the three imperial cathedrals on the Rhine. Construction began in 1030 under Holy Roman Emperor Conrad II, consecrated in 1061, and Henry IV resumed the expansion and renovation in 1182, completing it in 1106. …
