The idea that the basis of rulership is "Emperor established on earth by the grace of God" (Kaiser von Gottesgnaden in German). It is distinguished from the divine emperor. The term was coined by German ancient historian W. Ensslin to describe the idea advocated by 4th century Bishop Eusebius of Caesarea in order to support and strengthen the supremacy and absolute power of the Christian emperor Constantine I. This idea would develop into the imperial ideal of the later Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
